Chocologic giant dark chocolate buttons

Chocolate is supposed to be a treat, a little something special. While we have turned it in to an everyday pleasure. Daily indulgence isn’t always healthy. However for us chocoholics going a day or two without, is not so easy.

There is an increase of ‘healthier’ chocolates now available. Low sugar, low fat, dairy free! One of these is Chocologic. The claim is 90% less sugar.

The buttons are big, but what’s important how do they taste. They are passable. They are dark, you can taste the high coco content. However it only 55%, it does taste a little higher. Sadly it isn’t a rich chocolate, more Tuesday afternoon than Friday night.

It does have coco mass as it first and therefore largest ingredient. That points towards an effort to ensure it is the best it can be.

100g is 432kcal, with 34.8g of fat. Carbs 18.7g & 5.3g protein. The worry is 34.8g of fibre. That seems fairly high and definitely would keep me from eating too much.

I think 2.5 out of 5 is fair. It works when a chocolate hit is needed. Not spectacular, but okay.

(Finally, for clarity encase anyone searches. I don’t work for chocologic, however the holding group who owns the company I work for also own the company which makes chocologic!)

Madecasse – Honey crystal dark chocolate

I like the look of this chocolate from madecasse. The packaging is really inviting. The lemur on the front made me think of Madagascar before I read the back the cocoa came from Madagascar.

They shout about the heirloom cocoa and their direct trade approval on the back of pack. I will try bars with higher welfare and better providence. So it was an easy choice to give it a go.

The taste is good, it is dark enough at 63% to feel like a real dark chocolate. And it does. It isn’t too dark or bitter, but has a deep chocolate flavour. The honey crystals pepper the bar and give sweet hits which punches in each mouthful.

I really want to like this bar, but the honey crystals make the chocolate taste grainy. After a few squares it becomes unpleasant. It is a shame as  it has so much going for it. I’ve had three bar over the last couple of weeks before writing this review and I hoped I’d not notice it or begin to enjoy it. However it just can’t be helped. It is bitty, sand like & sadly off putting.

It is made in Italy, with cocoa liquor as the first ingredient. It is gluten free and certified vegan. 100g gives you 587kcal, 37.3fat, 45.3g carbs, 8g fibre & 8g protein.

Final verdict is 3 out of 5, I want to like it. But the grittyness is too much. The taste is nice and well balanced, but that isn’t enough. The province is good, but that’s not enough if the finished product doesn’t cut it.

It is also a 75g bar which is priced around the same as the 100g & 110g bars which is another issue. However It has recently been on offer, so buying a couple of bars wasn’t as painful as it could have been for chocolate I didn’t really enjoy.

Cadburys fruit and nut

The fruit and nut, one of my childhood favourites. It reminds me of being allowed ‘adult’ chocolate.

However I’ve not eaten one in a very long time. What a place to start for my first review.

Many people will say Cadbury’s dairy milk is their favourite. Just as many will turn their nose up at it, as it isn’t artisan.

One first thing to notice is that getting a small bar of this is not easy.  Mostly all I could find on shelf was either 110g or 200g big bars.

The first bite was satisfying, the mouth feel is great. It coats your whole mouth, not to quickly or thickly. It did take me back to my childhood. However as you’d expect my tastes have changed since then.

It is sweet, not too sweet, but close. The nuts add a crunch, the raisins juice. Both do improve the chocolate which as plain would lack a depth of flavour. Moorish, but lacking something.

Milk is the first item on the ingredients list & coco mass is sixth, behind fruit, nuts and sugar. You can tell! One positive is that it’s over 8% protein. However of 55.5g of carbs per 100g, 54.5g of that is sugar.  A 100g gives you 495 Kcals & 26g of fat. A sweet treat, however not one I’ll be partaking in too often.

It get 2.5 out of 5. The .5 is for nostalgia really. However the mouth feel is good.
